Landscape and climate, there is a wide topographic variation, from high plateaus to very low depressions. Danakil depression, about 116 m below sea level is the lowest point in Africa and Ras Dashen, with an altitude of 4,620 m is the fourth highest peak in Africa. The capital Addis Ababa is situated at 2400 m high. Ethiopian climate varies according to the different topographical regions. The central plateau has a moderate climate with minimal seasonal temperature variation. The mean minimum during the coldest season is 6° C, while the mean maximum rarely exceeds 26°. Temperature variations in the lowlands are much greater, and the heat in the desert, with occasional highs of 60°. Heavy rainfall occurs in most of the country during June, July, and August.

Ethiopia has also a large variety of indigenous animal species.
